FRM have determined carbon impacts for councils ranging from small town councils through to two tier authorities with multiple Councils and numerous collection, recycling, treatment and disposal systems. Most decisions require quantification of carbon impacts and the contribution to Net Zero carbon targets.

We have also peer reviewed central Government carbon models, as well as modelling undertaken by private sector consultancies and undertaken research projects for Defra on carbon impacts of waste management processes.

We are experienced in the use of the WRATE Lifecycle Assessment software tool for the determination of environmental impacts. We use WRATE to determine the carbon and other environmental impacts of waste collection, recycling, waste treatment and disposal to support procurement exercises, options appraisals, Strategic Environmental Assessments and ongoing process monitoring.

Carbon Calculator for HWRC Operations
Norfolk County Council
Project Title:
Carbon Calculator for Norfolk's HWRC Operations
Project Summary:

Norfolk County Council (NCC) were seeking external consultancy support to calculate the carbon impacts of their 20 Household Waste Recycling Centres (RCs). NCC were looking for a ‘tool’ that could be used by NCC staff for the future.

One of the main outputs from this project was a bespoke ‘Carbon Calculator tool’ (CCT) which NCC can modify and use for the estimation of carbon emissions associated with their RCs for the future, and also plan for future waste management operations.

The tool took into account, energy use on all sites (grid + benefits of having solar power on-site), impacts of reusing, recycling, treating and disposing of wastes, and associated transport impacts to intermediate and final material destinations. The impacts of building and offsetting a new HWRC site were also taken into account to assist future infrastructure planning.

As part of the project, NCC staff were trained on use of the tool and supplied with a full information pack including recorded video tutorials and a report.
