FRM have determined carbon impacts for councils ranging from small town councils through to two tier authorities with multiple Councils and numerous collection, recycling, treatment and disposal systems. Most decisions require quantification of carbon impacts and the contribution to Net Zero carbon targets.

We have also peer reviewed central Government carbon models, as well as modelling undertaken by private sector consultancies and undertaken research projects for Defra on carbon impacts of waste management processes.

We are experienced in the use of the WRATE Lifecycle Assessment software tool for the determination of environmental impacts. We use WRATE to determine the carbon and other environmental impacts of waste collection, recycling, waste treatment and disposal to support procurement exercises, options appraisals, Strategic Environmental Assessments and ongoing process monitoring.

Carbon modelling of the kerbside municipal waste management service
Project Summary:

Following on from a collection (cost and performance) modelling exercise, FRM undertook a carbon modelling project for the collection, recycling, treatment and disposal service in Herefordshire. We are trained to advanced level in applying the bespoke LCA tool for waste management systems, WRATE. This enabled quantification of the current service and alternative scenarios, establishing impact relative to the climate emergency.
